Furthermore, The Orange Shirts Day movement began from the story of Phyllis Webs tad from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation. So, In 1973, on her first day at St. Joseph’s Residential School in Williams Lake, BC, the orange shirts her granny bought for her for her first day of school stripped from her.
The “orange shirts” in Orange Shirts Day refers to the new shirts that Phyllis Webs tad given to her by her grandmother for her first day of school at St.Joseph’s Mission residential school in British Columbia. When Phyllis got to school, they took away her clothes, including her new shirt. It was never return.

The Orange Shirts Day Society was formed in Williams Lake by the Orange Shirts Day founders to encourage and support communities to recognize Orange Shirt Day and support reconciliation events and activities. Our goal is to create awareness of the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts of Residential Schools through Orange Shirt Day activities. A portion of sales is donated to the Orange Shirt Day Society.
